Daisy Edgar-Jones to Star in Disney+ Dark Comedy with Hoult

Rising star Daisy Edgar-Jones, who shot to fame in the BBC's critically acclaimed drama Normal People, has secured a major new television role. She is set to star opposite British actor Nicholas Hoult in an upcoming dark romantic comedy series for Disney+.

Mosquito: A Sardonic Look at Modern Marriage

The six-part series, titled Mosquito, is described as a "wry relationship comedy" and comes from the acclaimed pen of Tony McNamara, the writer behind Oscar-winning Poor Things and the hit series The Great. McNamara will also serve as an executive producer on the project.

The show promises a "sardonic look at a young couple's relationship". Edgar-Jones and Hoult will portray newlyweds Kate and Ed, whose seemingly perfect life is disrupted by an intrusive and unwanted new arrival—a mosquito. The official logline reveals that this tiny pest becomes the catalyst for their secrets to unravel as the pressures of daily life chip away at the personas they present to each other.

Powerhouse Creative Team and Cast

McNamara expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating: "I’m thrilled and excited to work with and team up two of the best actors around. I can’t wait to go make absurd comedy with them." This marks a reunion for McNamara and Hoult, who previously collaborated on the historical satire The Great.

For Edgar-Jones, this role continues her impressive career trajectory following her BAFTA and Golden Globe-nominated performance as Marianne in Normal People. Since then, she has starred in major films including Twisters with Glen Powell, the thriller Fresh, and Under the Banner of Heaven.

Nicholas Hoult brings a wealth of experience from projects like Skins, the X-Men franchise, and his recent role in Superman.

Disney+ Bets Big on UK Talent

The series represents a significant investment in original UK content for Disney+. Disney Television Studios president Eric Schrier and Disney+’s Head of Content Angela Jain praised McNamara's unique talent for "weaving sharply written, intricate dialogue with signature dark-humour and complexity."

They added that partnering with him on Mosquito "reinforces our ambitions in the UK." The series will be released on Disney+ internationally and on Hulu in the United States.

Filming on Mosquito is scheduled to commence in 2026. A specific release date for the series has not yet been announced. This project adds to McNamara's busy slate, which includes an adaptation of Avengelyne and a reported new Star Wars film co-written with Taika Waititi.
