Coronation Street's social worker Ruth has returned to the cobbles, with actress Amy Drake appearing in the role once again. Ruth first appeared on the long-running ITV soap in 2024 and has since made multiple appearances, typically offering support to several Weatherfield residents.
Ruth's return to the street
Earlier this year, Ruth was called in to support soap legend Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) and his son Bertie, after a teacher voiced concerns about Daniel following several dramatic weeks on the cobbles. Most recently, Ruth returned to assist the Metcalfe family concerning foster care arrangements for Lucy (Anya Dewin).
Viewers may remember that Lucy is the daughter of Tim's (Joe Duttine) estranged cousin Richie (Nathan Sussex), who ultimately murdered his wife, reports the Daily Star. Following confirmation from copper Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) that they have charged Richie with his wife's murder, she informed Tim and Sally (Sally Dynevor) that his daughter Lucy had been placed into care, while Richie maintains he acted in self-defence.
Foster placement collapse
During Thursday's episode (August 13), Ruth contacted Tim to inform him that Lucy's foster placements had collapsed. While sympathetic, Sally recognised that she and Tim were already stretched caring for the Michaelis children. Nevertheless, Tim ultimately agreed to allow Lucy to stay at their home, leaving Sally stunned. Ruth subsequently told the couple that Lucy was experiencing trauma and grief following her mum's murder.

Meanwhile, Ruth actress Amy Drake is well-established on television screens. The accomplished performer has featured in programmes including Hollyoaks, Cold Feet, Brassic, Malpractice and Doctors. Amy also enjoyed a period on Emmerdale, portraying both a receptionist and a paramedic. In 2021, Amy took on the role of Debbie in the BBC BAFTA-winning sitcom Alma's Not Normal, created and written by Sophie Willian.
Recently discussing her arrival on the soap, Lucy actress Anya shared an image on Instagram showing her smiling outside the legendary Rovers Return. In her post she expressed: "I still can't quite believe I get to say this, but I'm so grateful to be joining the cast of Coronation Street!" "This has been such a blessing, working alongside the most beautiful people, and getting to live out a dream I've had for so long. Some dreams really come true don't they?
