Coronation Street's Asha Alahan, played by Tanisha Gorey, will reach 'breaking point' during a harrowing paramedic shift in an hour-long special episode. The ITV soap has teased that the episode explores 'the hidden stresses and strains beneath her seemingly calm exterior'.
The second half of the episode will be told from Asha's perspective, flashing back to a day at work that includes witnessing a death, treating an injured elderly resident, and a 'harrowing racist attack'. Asha eventually suffers a crippling panic attack in the Rovers Return garden.
Asha has been hiding her true feelings about her twin brother Aadi's impending move to India. The special aims to highlight the pressures faced by trainee paramedics, with the storyline developed in collaboration with The Ambulance Staff Charity (TASC).
Tanisha Gorey said she feels 'honoured to be trusted' with the storyline, adding: 'Stepping into the shoes of a trainee paramedic and exploring the highs, lows, and emotional challenges of their work has been both moving and eye-opening.' TASC's Angie Crashley praised the soap for raising awareness of the mental health challenges ambulance staff face.
The special airs on Monday 25 August at 8pm on ITV1, and will be available on ITVX from 8am that day.
