Coronation Street made an unexpected appearance in the weekend schedule on Sunday, March 29, after the usual Friday episodes were postponed due to England’s football friendly against Uruguay. The ITV soap, typically airing weeknights at 8:30pm, was shown at 7:30pm on Sunday, alongside Emmerdale at 7pm.
Many viewers took to social media to express their enjoyment of the Sunday slot, with some calling for it to become a permanent fixture. One fan wrote: “There's something so right about Sunday night soaps. Bring them back permanently, ITV!” Another commented: “Having Corrie on a Sunday again after all these years is quite nostalgic. Should come back permanent.”
The scheduling change follows ITV’s announcement in February last year that from January 2026, Coronation Street and Emmerdale will shift to a new weekday pattern: a soaps power hour from Monday to Friday, with Emmerdale at 8pm and Coronation Street at 8:30pm. The temporary Sunday airing has sparked nostalgia among fans for the days when soaps were part of the weekend lineup.
The return also coincides with the recent “Corriedale” crossover event, which linked the two soaps in a special storyline. However, ITV’s Executive Producer for Continuing Drama, Iain MacLeod, previously stated that the crossover was a one-off celebration of the new schedule, not a sign of permanent changes.
