Coronation Street’s executive producer Iain MacLeod has hinted that a much-loved character will be axed as part of the soap’s 65th anniversary celebrations. Speaking ahead of the milestone in December, MacLeod promised “shocking twists” and “dramatic exits” for the ITV series.
“The soap gods demand a sacrifice when you have an event of this kind,” MacLeod said. “It’s going to be shocking. There will be lots of trauma, lots of drama, lots of twists.” He added that the biggest exits often involve characters viewers care about most, and that story conferences have been “fiery” as the team debates who should go.
Alongside the departures, MacLeod confirmed familiar faces will return for the anniversary, and a crossover episode with Emmerdale is planned for January 2026. Long-standing cast members Bill Roache, Michael Le Vell and Sally Dynevor have all signed new year-long contracts and are expected to feature prominently.
Meanwhile, actress Julia Goulding, who plays Shona Platt, has hinted at drama ahead for her character and David Platt following Shona’s pregnancy reveal. Goulding told the Mirror that the storyline will have “twists and turns” and that “there’s more drama on the way, definitely.”
