Coronation Street fans responded emotionally to a scene in the latest episode in which Debbie Webster failed to recognise a familiar face as her dementia storyline continued.
As viewers of the ITV soap know, actress Sue Devaney's time on the cobbles will eventually come to an end after her character was diagnosed with early-onset vascular dementia.
After Debbie grew concerned about her memory loss, she booked an appointment at a private clinic, believing her symptoms might be linked to the menopause. Following a series of incidents shown in flashback, including a blackout and a fall, the doctor advised further tests as he was concerned she was showing symptoms of early-onset vascular dementia.
Debbie's condition worsens
Since then, the show has documented the progress of Debbie's diagnosis, which was severely impacted during her prison stint earlier this year after she was jailed following her wedding to Ronnie Bailey for causing the death of vicar Billy Mayhew, when it was actually her son, Carl Webster, who was at the wheel at the time of the crash.
Debbie's behaviour has continued to worry her husband and loved ones. She was recently seen believing she was back in the 1980s working as a hairdresser, and slapped her brother Kevin after thinking he was bad-mouthing Carl to Steve McDonald and Ross Wilkes.
In Thursday's episode (September 24), the latest sign of Debbie's ill health was witnessed by fans. At the flat, over breakfast, Debbie was determined to help Carl celebrate landing a new job. Carl told Ronnie he didn't need a fuss, but he replied: "You know our Deb, any excuse for a party. Think of it as your moving out party, as that's what you'll be doing when you get your first paycheck."
Fans praise powerful scene
Later, Debbie went to Street Cars looking for Carl. Leaving to find him, she walked down the street and stopped a woman to ask for directions to the Rovers Return. The woman told her it was around the corner and asked if she was okay. When Debbie asked how she knew her name, the woman offered to take her to the pub herself, but Debbie appeared startled and asked her not to touch her.
It was only when Debbie walked off and the camera angle changed that viewers saw it was Toyah Battersby she had been talking to.

This is a tough storyline for me.." @airsqueen added: "I criticise this show a lot but credit where it's due, this is a clever and very effective way of portraying Debbie's illness."
Sad scenes ahead
It comes after one of Sue's co-stars shared that there will be 'really sad' Debbie scenes ahead as he prepares to film what he said would be the character's 'last Christmas' as her health deteriorates.
Jonathan Howard, who plays Carl, was speaking about working with Sue Devaney on the upcoming scenes set to air this festive season at the Inside Soap Awards 2026 on Monday (September 21) in Manchester.
