Coronation Street Extra Reveals Strict Rules on Tattoos and Jewellery
Corrie Extra Lifts Lid on Strict Tattoo and Jewellery Rules

A Coronation Street extra has opened up about life on set, revealing strict rules on tattoos and jewellery that fans would never guess from watching the show. Laura Jackson, who has worked as a background actor on the iconic soap, shared insights into the inclusive atmosphere and the realities of filming.

Strict Rules on Appearance

Laura explained that jewellery is kept to an absolute minimum on screen, especially in medical settings. "I've got three piercings, so obviously infection control, they wouldn't be allowing that. I was asked to take my earrings out and my necklace off," she said. Visible offensive tattoos are also banned, and extras must avoid false nails and eyelashes for certain roles. "Everything is about realism," she added.

Life as an Extra

Extras often wait just off set for their cue. For scenes in the Rovers Return, they sit in a circle near a TV screen to watch the filming. "We would then listen for a cue, so a certain word, and that would be our 'time to shine'," Laura said. Preparation is minimal for non-speaking roles, with directors guiding extras on the day.

One surprising detail is that extras are photographed after hair and makeup to ensure continuity across filming days. "They make sure that everything lines up as it should," Laura explained.

Inclusive Atmosphere

Laura praised the positive environment on set, noting that extras eat alongside main cast members in the canteen. "There's no separation in the canteen - everyone is equal," she said. She described Tina O'Brien, who plays Sarah Platt, as "an absolutely lovely person" after meeting her there.

Despite the strict rules, Laura emphasised that extras are valued. "Although you're an extra you're still important as you are there to make the scene look as realistic as possible. Without making it look real, there's no programme!"
