Coronation Street's Christmas wedding in jeopardy as Gail Platt faces betrayal, says boss

Coronation Street boss Kate Brooks has revealed that Gail Platt's Christmas Day wedding may not go ahead as secrets and betrayals threaten to derail the ceremony. The bride-to-be is left questioning who she can trust after discovering that those closest to her have been keeping things from her, leaving her unsure whether to go through with the marriage to Jesse Chadwick.

Brooks teased that the festive episode will be packed with drama, telling The Mirror: "There's a lot of betrayals, lots of secrets are exposed during this episode and it will be like classic Corrie with a bit of a twist." The storyline is set against the backdrop of Gail's wedding, with the Platts at the heart of the action. "It's a story about family and how secrets impact and implode on a family," she added.

Gail, who has been a fixture on the cobbles for 50 years, is said to be contemplating every decision she has ever made as she struggles with the revelations. Even her beloved mother has lied to her, leaving Gail unsure whether she wants to marry Jesse or leave the street at all. Brooks promised that the episode would be steeped in nostalgia, saying: "She's been such an icon on the street for such a long time. 50 years of television, which is amazing."

Fans can expect a mix of emotions, with Brooks hoping viewers will be crying, laughing, and gasping as secrets unfold. "Old school Corrie but just with a real modern twist," she said, adding that the team wanted to give Gail "the exit that she deserves." The Christmas Day episode will see Gail surrounded by chaos as various bombshells go off around her, with her oblivious to the drama until it all comes to a head.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX. Whether Gail makes it down the aisle remains to be seen, but the soap boss has promised a memorable farewell for one of Weatherfield's most beloved characters.
