Peter Ash has spoken of the "amazing" response to his portrayal of motor neurone disease (MND) in Coronation Street, as his character Paul Foreman continues to deteriorate from the incurable condition.
The storyline has been widely praised by critics and fans, and was named Best Storyline at the RadioTimes.com Soap Awards, sponsored by Inspired Villages.
Ash said there was considerable pressure to portray the disease accurately, with extensive research involved. He described the reaction from people living with MND and their families as "amazing", adding that it feels good to know the storyline is being handled correctly.
The actor also admitted to "mixed emotions" about the storyline, which will ultimately lead to Paul's death and his departure from the soap. He called it "a double-edged sword", saying he was sad to go but grateful to have been trusted with the role.
His on-screen partner, Daniel Brocklebank, also paid tribute to Ash's performance and the storyline at the awards ceremony, which took place on 13th July.
