Frank Grimes, the actor best known for playing Barry Connor in Coronation Street, has died at the age of 78 following a short illness. Tributes have been paid by fans and colleagues, with many calling for the ITV soap to acknowledge his passing on screen.
Grimes appeared as Barrington "Barry" Connor, father of Paul, Liam and Michelle Connor, from 2008 to 2015. He returned for Michelle's wedding to Steve McDonald and featured in more than 50 episodes, becoming a key figure in the Connor family storyline.
Fans have expressed hopes that Coronation Street will pay tribute to the actor. One supporter said: "Hopefully Corrie will make reference to Liam and Ryan's grandad passing away at some stage. I always enjoyed his scenes when he did appear." Another wrote on Reddit: "Aw, that's sad to hear. I also enjoyed seeing him and Helen whenever they were around."
The Irish Cultural Centre described Grimes as "one of Ireland's greatest actors," praising his self-penned production on James Joyce and his frequent stage performances. The tribute noted his "spell-binding" acting, "mesmerising voice" and "warm hearted" nature, adding that he received standing ovations for his Joyce tribute.
Beyond Coronation Street, Grimes had an extensive career in television and film, with roles in Mrs Brown's Boys, A Bridge Too Far, Tulips of Harlem, The Outsider and Blind Justice. He also made guest appearances in Doctors, Casualty and Holby City.
He is survived by his wife Ginnette, daughter Tilly, son Andrew, seven grandchildren and extended family. The Irish Cultural Centre extended condolences, saying: "May Frank sleep easy now."
