Coronation Street actress Vicky Myers has confirmed she is engaged to her secret real-life boyfriend. The 50-year-old, who plays DS Lisa Swain, responded on X to a troll’s now-deleted post accusing her of keeping her boyfriend hidden, writing: “He’s actually my fiancé.”
This is the first time Vicky has addressed her relationship, leading to plenty of congratulatory messages from fans, many of whom also called for the ‘speculation about her private life’ to end.
Career and recent storylines
While Corrie is Vicky’s most well-known role, she’s been a soap regular since 1998, with previous roles in Ackley Bridge and Casualty. Her other acting credits include hit ITV dramas Unforgotten and The Long Shadow. When she made her Weatherfield debut four years ago, she arrived as a single mother and detective, who juggled various investigations alongside parenting her own troubled teen. In March 2024, it was confirmed that Lisa would become a regular and that her own personal backstory would be fleshed out.
Her character struck up a romance with Carla Connor (Alison King) later that year, and they became one of the soap’s most beloved couples, with a devoted fan base who dubbed them ‘Swarla’. Mere months ago, they made history by tying the knot in Corrie’s first-ever lesbian wedding.
Betsy’s stroke storyline
Vicky’s gripping storylines in recent months included the shocking discovery that her past partner, Becky, was actually alive and had been in hiding, with Lisa believing she had died in the line of duty. After giving up everything to move to Spain with her, it was exposed that Becky had abducted Carla and left her to die. Following Becky’s arrest, Lisa arrested her ex-wife and reconciled with Carla, leading to their historic wedding ceremony earlier this year.
Then came a huge test for the Connor-Swain clan, when Betsy was hospitalised, having suffered a stroke following a blood clot as a result of the pressure Dylan (Liam McCheyne) put on her neck when they had sex. Writers have been widely praised for their handling of the storyline and for raising awareness of the dangers of non-fatal strangulation.
Ahead of the scenes airing, a spokesperson shared: “In the coming months, viewers will witness Betsy’s challenging recovery journey as she transitions from hospital to home, navigating significant life changes. This storyline highlights the profound physical and emotional impact of a stroke at such a young age as Betsy battles to adjust to her new reality.”
Young actress Sydney then opened up to Metro about the importance of the ‘taboo’ storyline, despite its controversy. “You just have to take one look at the reaction to understand why these topics stay taboo. I think, negative or positive, people are talking about it, and that’s exactly the reaction we wanted from it,” she said.
Mum Lisa has been by Betsy’s side throughout her recovery thus far, with future episodes set to dive deeper into the impact of her ordeal on her ‘two mums’, as well as the ramifications for Dylan.
Off-screen, Vicky has also heaped praise on Sydney, 24, for her portrayal of Betsy’s condition, commenting on one of her posts: “You have worked tirelessly throughout and your commitment, dedication, care, respect, hours of research, your attention to detail… Wow! You have embraced this storyline and delivered take after take, with such deep, emotional sincerity. I’m in awe. A tour de force and I’m enormously proud of you. Love you.”
