Coronation Street favourite Bernie Winter is set for more turmoil as she faces an indecent proposal amid her stalking horror. The cafe waitress, played by Jane Hazlegrove, crossed paths with Mal Roper on an ill-fated night out earlier this year, leading to a series of terrifying events.
After sharing an evening taking drugs in his hotel room, Mal began working alongside Bernie at Roy's Rolls as an electrician. He ended up in hospital after being mysteriously attacked, with DC Kit Green—revealed as Bernie's long-lost son—responsible after witnessing Mal threaten his mother. If discovered, Kit's job hangs in the balance.
In upcoming scenes, Bernie will be faced with an indecent proposal from Mal, which she eventually accepts. The drama unfolds as Dev is questioned over the attack, and Bernie confesses to daughter Gemma that Kit was responsible. Days later, Bernie returns to the Chariot Square Hotel, where Ryan Connor notices something is wrong. She knocks on Mal's door and enters as he pats the bed, signalling for her to sit down.
Actress Jane Hazlegrove explained that Bernie is left "absolutely terrified" by Mal, who confesses his feelings and turns sinister when rejected. She said: "She’s really quite frightened, and she’s been on the end of an aggressive, violent man a lot. So this is absolutely terrifying, she’s in deep now." Hazlegrove added that Mal is "unhinged" and has entered stalker territory, even cutting Bernie's head out of her wedding picture.
Bernie decides to tell Dev the truth to remove Mal's power over her. Hazlegrove noted: "Bernie decides Dev must know the truth in order to remove Mal's power over her. She knows that if Dev knows what Mal has been up to, it will all be okay." Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
