Soap Fans Vent Fury Over ITV's Repeated Cancellations for Sports
Devoted viewers of Coronation Street and Emmerdale have been left frustrated and disappointed once again, as ITV has cancelled the beloved soap operas' Friday episodes in favour of sports programming. This marks another instance where the broadcaster has prioritised rugby coverage over the scheduled soap broadcasts, sparking a wave of anger across social media platforms.
Broken Promises and Unfulfilled Episodes
Since January, ITV had committed to airing both soaps five days a week, a pledge that has repeatedly been broken due to sports scheduling conflicts. The latest cancellation on Friday has particularly incensed fans, as the 'missing episodes' are rarely rescheduled or replaced, leaving audiences feeling short-changed and ignored.
"What again !! This is happening way too often," one exasperated fan commented online, capturing the sentiment of many. Another added, "Why can’t rugby go on ITV3?" highlighting the availability of alternative channels within the ITV network that could host sports without disrupting soap schedules.
Viewer Pleas for Change Fall on Deaf Ears
Fans have consistently urged ITV executives to reconsider their scheduling decisions, suggesting practical solutions such as uploading episodes to the ITVX streaming platform or moving sports to other channels. "Exactly! Or they could at least still put the Corrie episode on ITVX," argued a viewer, emphasising the digital option that could satisfy both soap enthusiasts and sports fans.
The frustration is compounded by the fact that filming schedules are often adjusted around these cancellations, meaning the episodes are never aired at all. "When will the missing episodes of Corrie and Emmerdale due to sport on Friday be shown?" asked a concerned fan, to which the answer is typically never, as production plans accommodate these disruptions.
A Pattern of Disruption and Fan Backlash
This is not an isolated incident; similar cancellations have occurred multiple times since the start of the year, with rugby and football coverage frequently taking precedence. "Why can't the footy and rugby be put on another channel, we always miss out, so unfair!!!" vented another supporter, reflecting the growing impatience with ITV's prioritisation of sports over soaps.
Some fans have pointed out the broadcaster's extensive channel lineup, including ITV2, ITV3, ITV4, and ITVX, questioning why sports cannot be relocated. "ITV has four channels plus ITVX so why not put football on one of their other channels and leave Corrie alone?" one comment read, underscoring the perceived lack of consideration for loyal soap viewers.
While a minority of viewers dismiss the issue as trivial, the overwhelming response from the soap community has been one of betrayal and annoyance. As one fan succinctly put it, "Never mind the loyal supporters of soaps so just take them off for sport," capturing the sense of neglect felt by many.
As the debate continues, Emmerdale airs weeknights at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX, while Coronation Street follows at 8:30pm on the same platforms. However, with sports seasons in full swing, fans remain wary of further disruptions to their favourite shows.
