Colin from Accounts, the acclaimed Australian comedy series, is concluding after its third season. Married creators and stars Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer have decided to end the show on their own terms.
Why End Now?
“We don’t want to flog a dead horse,” Brammall says. “It definitely feels right.” Dyer adds, “It is not that the horse is dead yet – we don’t even want to find it is having trouble breathing.” The decision came naturally as the couple balanced work and family life with two children.
Season 3 Plot
The new season opens three years after Gordon made an excruciating marriage proposal to Ashley at a friend’s wedding. The couple has split and are dating other people, but a chance doctor’s appointment at Ashley’s work reunites them. “It’s almost like taking them back to the start,” Dyer says.
Avoiding Sydney Clichés
The show deliberately steers clear of iconic Sydney landmarks like the Harbour Bridge and Opera House. “We don’t need to sell Sydney to the world, we don’t need to sell Australia to the world,” Brammall says. The setting in the inner west gives the show a universality that international viewers can relate to.
Ignoring US Notes
When an American executive suggested replacing “arvo” with “afternoon,” the creators refused. “It stayed in,” Brammall says. This commitment to authenticity has earned the show fans like Nick Offerman, Lena Dunham, and Anne Hathaway.
Personal Experiences in the Show
Many moments are drawn from real life: Dyer once walked a pram into a pole after seeing a hot guy, and Brammall’s own infertility issues informed Gordon’s testicular cancer storyline. “These little truthful thoughts or feelings or ideas or experiences can float through and generally, if it’s funny or if it feels real, then it’s in the show,” Brammall says.
What’s Next?
Despite wrapping the series, Brammall and Dyer plan to work together again. “I wouldn’t want to write with anybody else,” Dyer says. For now, success looks like balance. “To me, success looks like balance and finish reading my book,” she adds.
