The ITV documentary series Cold Case Forensics returns on Tuesday night (July 28) with forensic scientist Dr Angela Gallop leading the investigation into complex cold cases.
New season revisits notorious deaths
The harrowing true crime docu-series sees Dr Gallop and her team re-examine complicated murder cases using advanced scientific techniques that were not available at the time of the crimes.
Through these re-examinations, they have helped bring killers to justice. The new season delves into the death of Italian banker Roberto Calvi, also known as 'God's Banker'.
The Calvi case
Roberto Calvi, chairman of Italy's largest private bank with ties to the Vatican, disappeared in 1982 for nine days before his body was found hanging under Blackfriars Bridge in London. The initial coroner's report found no evidence of foul play and ruled his death a suicide.
However, UK police were puzzled by the circumstances: his pockets were stuffed with bricks, he carried a fake passport in a different name, and had £10,000 ($14,000) in cash in various currencies.
In 2002, Italian prosecutors officially reopened the case, and the City of London Police began a murder inquiry in September 2003. Dr Gallop was hired by Calvi's family to prove he had been killed.
Other cases in the series
The new season also explores the cases of solicitor Cheryl Lewis and ten-year-old Damilola Taylor. The first series covered the deaths of Rachel Nickell, Lynette White, and Stephen Lawrence.
