The 1977 war film The Eagle Has Landed, based on Jack Higgins's best-selling 1975 novel, is now available to stream on BBC iPlayer. The movie features a star-studded Hollywood cast including Michael Caine, Robert Duvall, Donald Sutherland, and Jean Marsh.
Set in 1943, the plot follows German intelligence officer Max Radl as he devises a plan to kidnap Winston Churchill during a visit to a small English village. Colonel Kurt Steiner leads a team of disguised paratroopers, aided by Irish agent Liam Devlin. The mission is jeopardised when a soldier's uniform is revealed during a rescue, drawing in American forces.
Despite not winning critical acclaim or Academy Awards, the film has become a favourite among war film enthusiasts. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 71% rating, with a mix of positive and negative reviews. One viewer described it as a “brilliant lazy afternoon war film packed with actors you recognise,” while another praised its “authentic vibe.”
However, not all feedback was favourable. Some criticised the portrayal of women and found certain plot points implausible. One review called it “a terrible 1970s bit of hokum,” while another suggested it is best enjoyed while drunk. Despite the mixed reception, the film remains a notable entry in the World War II genre.
