Filming has commenced on the new BBC sitcom Ann Droid (working title), with BAFTA-nominated Sue Johnston and Paul Ready joining Diane Morgan in the cast. The six-part series, written by Morgan and Sarah Kendall, is produced by Boffola Pictures and Witchcraft Industries for BBC iPlayer and BBC One.
Set in 2029, the comedy follows Sue (Johnston), a widow whose son Michael (Ready) gives her a second-hand AnnDroid Z58/100 Basic Eldercare Robot. The robot, named Linda (Morgan), is designed to keep elderly people company and monitor their health, but Sue finds it an overly attentive and socially inept nuisance. However, she soon learns to use the droid to her advantage, leading to an unlikely friendship between the two.
Sue Johnston expressed her excitement, saying, 'I’m thrilled to be back in the heart of BBC comedy... a comedy that will resonate with lots of different audiences.' Paul Ready added, 'If you get a chance to work with Diane Morgan, you take it. Immediately!' The series is directed by Joe Roberts, with executive producers including Shane Allen and Diane Morgan.
