As Cassie Plummer prepares to leave Weatherfield, actress Claire Sweeney admits that one person felt missing – her onscreen mother, Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman). Claire’s final scenes as Cassie air next week when Tyrone Dobbs’ mother loses her family and her fiancé after her effort to oust predatory ex Ross Wilkes ends in disaster.
Tearful Goodbye Without Evelyn
Her plot to make Ross fail a drug test ended when fiancé Steve discovered her plan to spike Ross’s smoothie. Steve dumped Cassie, and Tyrone threw her out. Devastated, Cassie takes a job as a cleaner on a cruise ship. As she’s about to leave, Ross offers a lift. Reluctantly accepting, Cassie gets in, and Ross locks the doors and speeds off – the last we see of her.
Claire reflected on her final scene with Metro: “It’s funny because my very last scene—the one where I’m driving away—was actually filmed two or three weeks before I finished. … For me, the final scene in the Dobbs house felt like the real goodbye because that’s where I started with Alan, Jennie, and the kids.” Despite the tearjerking au revoir, she added: “I missed Maureen Lipman so much; I would have loved for her to have been there for that.”
Maureen’s Reduced Screen Time
Maureen Lipman, who plays Cassie’s acid‑tongued mother, reduced her screen time to appear in a new production, Allegra, which launched during her 80th birthday and will tour the UK before a West End run. Evelyn played an integral part in Cassie’s story – it’s barely a year since Tyrone met his mother after she abandoned him at a police station. Cassie struggled with addiction but got clean, guided by Evelyn. Maureen has said she’d return only with “a proper storyline”: “I love Corrie but I don’t know when I am going back … I said, ‘I will come back, but you will have to give me a proper storyline.’” She called it “a perfect job.”
Cassie’s Ambiguous Exit
Claire also highlighted the proposal scene with Simon Gregson (Steve McDonald): “It was so brilliantly written—it managed to be funny, poignant, and everything in between.” That love story was cut short by Ross, Tyrone’s long‑lost dad, who paid to sleep with Cassie when she was 15 and has threatened to kill her. Claire called Ross a “smiling assassin”: “He is so good at that charm, but there’s a chilling quality … I remember a scene … he had me up against the wall; he was truly terrifying. Cassie is a survivor … when she tries to get rid of him … it isn’t because she’s inherently malicious; it’s a survival mechanism.”
Potential Return
Assuming Cassie is alive, she is primed for a comeback. Claire left after landing the role of Miss Hannigan in Annie The Musical. She said: “I would love to come back. There was no other reason for me to leave other than getting the part of Miss Hannigan. I was genuinely so happy on Corrie. … I only left because a project I’ve been working toward for 15 years finally came to fruition.” She spoke to producer Kate six or seven months in advance to craft a proper exit.
