Claire Sweeney, who plays Cassie Plummer on Coronation Street, is taking a short break from the ITV soap to film the Channel 5 murder-mystery series The Good Ship Murder. The actress will be absent for approximately one week to reprise her role as Cruise Director Beverley Carnell.
The Good Ship Murder also stars former Coronation Street actors Catherine Tyldesley and Shayne Ward, who play First Officer Kate Woods and detective Jack Grayling respectively. The first series averaged 2.1 million viewers, and the upcoming series promises more sun, sea, and sinister plots. Hollyoaks star Ross Adams joins the cast as new character Colin Smallwood.
A source told The Sun: “Claire’s taking a short break from Corrie to film. It’s a matter of days and won’t affect anything on the cobbles. Everything has been arranged so there will be no on-screen disruption.” Sweeney recently signed a new one-year contract with Coronation Street and expressed her happiness to fully invest in her character Cassie.
Off-screen, Sweeney, 53, is in a relationship with boxer Ricky Hatton, whom she met on ITV’s Dancing on Ice. The couple have been seen on dates and recently enjoyed a holiday in Tenerife. A source described their chemistry as “electric” and noted that Hatton is “completely besotted”.
