Christina Ricci will not return for the remaining episodes of Wednesday season 2, following her character's death in the third episode. The actress, who played Marilyn Thornhill in the first season, reprised her role as Laurel Gates in the latest series of the Netflix hit.
Fans of the show were shocked when Ricci's character was killed off by Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan) in episode three, titled Call of the Woe. In a dramatic scene, Tyler transformed into his Hyde form and fatally stabbed Laurel through the chest after she attempted to regain control over him.
Laurel Gates had been revealed as the descendant of villainous Joseph Crackstone and the master of Tyler's Hyde persona in season one. However, when she confronted Tyler in season two at Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital, he made it clear he wanted nothing more to do with her.
Dr Rachael Fairburn (Thandiwe Newton), who was treating Tyler, had brought in Laurel hoping she could help rehabilitate him. Instead, the encounter ended with Laurel's demise, ensuring Ricci will not appear in future episodes of season two or any potential third series.
Ricci's exit marks a significant turn for the series, as Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) focuses on new mysteries at Nevermore Academy. The character of Laurel Gates, who was also known as botany teacher Marilyn Thornhill, first appeared in the initial season of the darkly comedic Netflix show.
