Fans are praising Apple TV+'s new historical drama 'Chief of War', starring Jason Momoa, as a 'truly groundbreaking' series. The nine-part show, set at the turn of the 18th century, explores the unification and colonisation of Hawai'i from an indigenous perspective.
Viewers have taken to social media to express their admiration, with one Native Hawaiian viewer calling it 'truly groundbreaking' for its authentic storytelling on a major platform. Another fan noted the significance of seeing 'brown Pasefika faces' and the use of Ōlelo Hawai'i, while a third said they are 'obsessed' after just two episodes.
Created by Jason Momoa and Thomas Pa'a Sibbett, the series follows warrior Ka'iana (Momoa) as he attempts to unite four warring kingdoms before Western colonisation. Momoa also directs the final episode, and the score is co-produced by Hans Zimmer and James Everingham.
The cast is predominantly Polynesian, including Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, and Cliff Curtis. The first two episodes are available now on Apple TV+, with new episodes releasing weekly until 19 September.
