Channel 4 has confirmed its replacement for one of its most chilling true crime documentaries after it came to a brutal end last week. 999: What Happened Next returned to screens last month with a brand new series, plunging viewers into real life criminal investigations across the UK.
Taking viewers beyond a 999 call, the series hears from detectives involved as they recount a harrowing investigation and the dark realities they uncovered. Covering a case from start to finish, the short series saw a different investigation per episode, with each one as chilling as before. However, after just four episodes, it has come to an end in what will be disappointing news for fans of true crime.
Final episode details
An official synopsis reads: "Unflinching, emotionally charged and grounded in real lives forever changed, this series is a compelling exploration of modern policing and the human cost of violent crime."
Just last week (September 28), 999: What Happened Next aired one of its most powerful episodes to date, with a chilling murder investigation after one woman was found dead in a nature reserve. Detectives soon uncovered horrific truths as they realised Angela Shellis had been brutally killed by her own son Tristan Roberts.
Replacement programming
Elsewhere, viewers witnessed a major police operation to bring down a gang targeting family homes across the UK. The episode marked the fourth and final in the series as it came to an explosive end.
Instead, Channel 4 will air something else in its place this week, taking up the usual 9pm slot tonight (Monday, October 5). Airing at 9pm will be all new crime drama Pierre starring David Harewood as it follows a complex legal case.
Alternative for true crime fans
However, for true crime fans, all is not lost as over on Channel 5 a popular documentary series will return for its second run. Airing at 8pm, Traffic Cops: Elite Squad One will follow the UK's fastest responders ready to race at top speeds to save lives and catch suspects.
Perfect for fans of 24 Hours in Police Custody and Police Interceptors, an official synopsis reads: "Jamie Theakston narrates as North Yorkshire's police biker cops pursue law breakers in the north-east of England."
In this episode, Joe and Paddy pursue vehicles that fail to stop, while officers investigate a suspected burglary and a driver using a trader's insurance policy incorrectly. Tonight's episode, narrated by Jamie Theakston, will follow North Yorkshire's police motorcyclists where they are on the hunt for a car believed to be using cloned plates. Elsewhere, an officer attempts to stop a vehicle after catching a strange smell, but a high speed chase soon ensues.
Traffic Cops: Elite Squad One airs tonight at 8pm on Channel 5.
