Celebrity Traitors sexism row over female banishments

Celebrity Traitors has been hit by sexism claims after fans pointed out that a majority of women have been banished from the BBC show. On Friday's episode, viewers watched as Traitor King Kenny was given the power to break the banishment deadlock between Joanne McNally and Sharon Rooney after he was gifted a deciding double vote.

But viewers noticed that it was, yet again, between two women up for banishment. So far, only two of the six contestants banished were men. Jerry Hall, Myha'la, Julie Hesmondhalgh and Professor Hannah Fry are the ones to have been banished so far. Richard E Grant, who openly admitted he was a Traitor, and Joe Lycett, who insisted he was desperate to be recruited as a Traitor, are the only men to be banished.

Fans Point Out Pattern

Flocking to X, fans pointed out the issue. One tweeted: "The way all the women in that castle clocked the pattern before the men even noticed it says everything about who actually reads the room."

While another commented: "They've only banished two men at the table, one who told them he was a traitor and one they knew wanted to be a traitor. I've honestly never noticed the sexism as much in the past. So many men leading the charge against women (apart from the one who's very beautiful of course). So many patterns of behaviour women recognise from their working life. #CelebrityTraitors."

A third wrote: "Yeah I picked up on how it's only women (apart from the two you said) who's been banished from the round tables. Even the ones currently who are receiving heat from the round table are all women. None of the men have really received any heat at all really."

Previous Racial Bias Claims

It comes just weeks after star Myha'la said that "unconscious racial bias" exists in the game. The actress, 30, had defended her co-stars in a lengthy response to a comment saying she'd been banished for being black saying they "in no way consciously put bias on me because of my race," saying: "I sealed my own fate."

Myha'la was voted out after some other players began to suspect she had been close to actor Richard E Grant, a confirmed Traitor, and was caught winking at him as he left the game. The American actress, who stars in the drama Industry, shared an update about her experience on the BBC show. In a comment on her post, entrepreneur Chantel Sachanna wrote: "Unfortunately you were banished because you are BLACK. This is a consistent thread in this racist show."

Myha'la replied: "I understand why you feel this way, and I may have agreed with you had I not winked at Richard effectively aligning myself with a known Traitor, found and concealed then seemingly reluctantly revealed I had a shield, or (what you really don't see much of) expressed my thoughts and feelings openly to literally everyone (which many people who get out early in this game do). I sealed my own fate! And that early in the game there is there is VERY little to grasp on to, and I gave them... a lot. However, I do agree that unconscious racial and cultural bias exists in this game where my authenticity or honesty or the ways in which I choose to express myself look suspicious to people are are unfamiliar with people like me. I had this fear coming into the game, as I am a BIG fan and also clocked right away how prevalent this is in this game. And I came in knowing I'd be the only American (apart from Honorary British National Treasure Jerry Hall)."
