The BBC has released a first look at the Casualty 40th anniversary double bill special, teasing a dramatic episode that will leave lives hanging "in the balance."
Major Incident Rocks Holby City Hospital
Holby City Hospital is set to be plunged into "chaos" in the special, with favourites Stevie (Elinor Lawless) and Flynn (Olly Rix) left "fighting for survival." Meanwhile, Dr Dylan Keogh (William Beck) battles personal tragedy while leading his team.
The episode is just weeks away, and the broadcaster has teased what's to come in an unsettling 20-second trailer. It shows a car driving over a bridge at night as what appears to be a massive explosion takes place, with flames seen in the sky. As children sing Happy Birthday, the camera cuts to scenes of the ambulance bay and conflict at the hospital, while a man with facial injuries is rushed along on a stretcher. Several medical staff are seen looking flabbergasted as a screen flags up seemingly endless alerts.
What the Synopsis Reveals
"The gripping, anniversary event centres on a high-stakes major incident that throws Holby into chaos," a synopsis explained. "Lives hang in the balance and the ED team are pushed to their limits in a tense and emotionally charged story that brings together some of the show's most beloved characters. As the fallout continues, a major rescue operation unfolds, forcing impossible life-or-death decisions and testing the courage, resilience and leadership of those at the heart of the hospital."
Casualty's Legacy
Casualty first hit screens in the UK in September 1986 and has now run for 41 series, welcoming several big name stars such as Orlando Bloom, Martin Freeman, and Tom Hiddleston over the years. The drama, which also gave rise to spin-off Holby City, has been a hit with critics and viewers, scooping many accolades including multiple British Academy Television Awards and Royal Television Society Awards.
