Carrie Adaptation's 'Infuriating' Finale Will Divide Fans

Mike Flanagan's eight-part adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie is streaming now on Prime Video, and early reviews have dubbed it a 'must watch'. The series holds an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with some critics calling it "a remarkable triumph" and another stating: "Carrie is a horror series for the ages. This is television at its finest, and an absolute must-watch."

A Reimagining of the Iconic Story

For those unfamiliar with the original tale, Carrie follows a misfit high schooler named Carrie White, who has spent most of her young life in seclusion with her domineering mother. After her father's unexpected death, Carrie enters a new world and faces the challenges of attending a public high school. As she struggles to fit in, she becomes drawn into a bullying scandal that coincides with a significant personal event and the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers.

The story is based on Stephen King's debut novel, originally published in 1974. Carrie has been adapted for the screen multiple times, first in 1976, then again in 2013, with a straight-to-television movie also produced in 2002. Now it has been brought up to date for 2026.

Comparisons and Praise

The series has been compared to one of the biggest hits from a rival streamer, as one verdict stated: "Think Netflix's Adolescence with a supernatural spin and it works surprisingly well." Another shared: "It's a more than solid reimagining of Stephen King's character with some absolutely sensational moments."

However, it is already becoming clear that fans will most likely be left divided, particularly over one certain storyline and the show's explosive conclusion. One reviewer, who enjoyed the majority of the series, admitted there was one huge problem. They said: "Flanagan makes a huge mistake in the final episode that spoils his point. I was infuriated. Up until that point, I'd loved the show, but that last episode was just spoiled for me, or as I write in my notebook: 'I think I'm taking a star away for that bad decision'."
