In tonight’s Coronation Street (Friday, September 25), Carla Connor-Swain (Alison King) stepped up to help a confused Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney), but their interaction had an upsetting outcome.
Debbie was diagnosed with young-onset dementia in early 2025, and her condition has been gradually deteriorating ever since. In tonight’s episode, she had plans to meet with son Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard), but ended up wandering Coronation Street searching for him when he failed to show.
A search leads to a shocking discovery
When she bumped into Sam Blakeman (Jude Riordan), he pointed her in the direction of the Rovers, where, unbeknown to Debbie, Eva Price (Catherine Tyldesley) was lying unconscious at the bottom of the stairs in the cellar. Debbie stumbled across Eva during her search for Carl, and immediately rushed to find help.
Unfortunately, when she got outside, an altercation with Will Driscoll (Lucas Hodgson-Wale) distracted her and left her confused. It was then that Carla and the Underworld gang found her and, sensing Debbie’s confusion, Carla offered to escort her home.
An upsetting realisation
As Carla settled Debbie on the couch, Debbie remained unresponsive, until Carl emerged from the bedroom. Carla warned him that Debbie didn’t seem to be doing too well, before saying her goodbyes.
Devastatingly, it became clear that Debbie hadn’t recognised Carla, as she reflected on how kind she was, before asking Carl if Carla was his girlfriend.
This isn’t the first time Debbie has been unable to recognise her neighbours, with a recent scene shot from Debbie’s point of view giving viewers an insight into how she sees the world. In yesterday’s episode, Debbie bumped into a woman who seemed to know her, but she was unrecognisable to both Debbie and viewers. However, as Debbie walked away, it was revealed that the character she’d been talking to was actually Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor), who was played by a different actress in the scene.
Memories resurface
As if Debbie’s situation wasn’t heartbreaking enough, when Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan) told her about the ambulance outside the Rovers, Debbie was struck with the memory of Eva lying on the floor. Debbie’s condition is clearly getting worse, but how will her loved ones react?
