The 79th Cannes Film Festival, drawing to a close this weekend, has showcased a dazzling array of red carpet fashion, from stunning successes to memorable missteps. While stars like Jane Fonda in a custom black Gucci gown and Demi Moore in a sequined white Jacquemus dress wowed onlookers, others failed to hit the mark.
The Worst Dressed
French actress Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, typically a fashion icon, opted for an overwhelmingly ruffled purple Anthony Vaccarello frock that drew criticism. John Travolta raised eyebrows with his now-viral berets, later explaining he aimed to channel 'old school directors'. Influencer Matteo Sinet made a startling statement by dyeing his teeth black. Italian influencer Francesca Preani wore a baby blue ensemble overloaded with ruffles, sheer fabrics, and sequins. Andie MacDowell, known for her style, chose a look too simple for the glamorous event. Adrian Grenier appeared too relaxed in Converse at a fundraiser. Ukrainian model Sawa Pontyjska wore a very risque outfit, while presenter Hofit Golan donned a blue gown that was more feather than dress. Tilda Swinton experimented with a velvet-finish co-ord from Chanel.
The Best Dressed
Jane Fonda proved her legendary status in a black custom Dior gown. Demi Moore stunned in a sequined frock with Chopard jewellery. Barbara Palvin, with husband Dylan Sprouse, showed off her baby bump in a custom Ella Mae gown styled by Marc Eram. Supermodel Bella Hadid paid homage to Jane Birkin in a crochet-style Schiaparelli dress, reminiscent of Birkin's iconic 1969 Pucci gown. Robbie Williams brought smart tailoring with a fun brooch to the amfAR Gala. Eva Longoria embodied Old Hollywood glamour in a figure-hugging scarlet dress. Emma Weymouth balanced drama and sophistication. Cate Blanchett looked like a work of art in a floral Givenchy gown. Heidi Klum, 52, flaunted her curves in a low-cut brown gown at the Carlton Beach Club.
Behind the Scenes
Actress Blanca Blanco revealed to the Daily Mail that the festival involves intense security with armed guards, police on horses, and motorcycle cops. A strict guest list requires badges, and lines for commoners can take up to 10 hours. No popcorn or candy is offered in screening rooms. The small town hosts 40,000 visitors, leading to packed hotels and restaurants. VIPs enjoy perks like private helicopter rides, roped-off areas, rooftop dinners, and yacht parties. Guests must arrive by car, never on foot, even if their hotel is across the street, as cars serve as placeholders for timing. On the red carpet, ID badges are checked, and stars have less than a minute to pose before being moved along. Cell phones are prohibited, so no selfies are allowed.
