The Call the Midwife Christmas special has delivered a significant update on Trixie Aylward's marriage, confirming that her American adventure has come to an end. In the festive episode, set in 1971, Trixie (Helen George) remains in Poplar while her husband Matthew (Olly Rix) stays in New York for work.
During a meal at Nonnatus House, Trixie's colleague Phyllis Crane (Linda Bassett) expressed approval at her return, saying: "It's good you're moving back to London, lass." Trixie replied: "Matthew has to stay in New York until the autumn," adding that her stepson Jonty is starting pre-prep at Easter, so she needs to get him home and settled.
Trixie then asked Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) if she could resume midwifery duties, saying: "I will be free for midwifery duties should you be short-staffed." The request came as the nuns and nurses prepared to fly to Hong Kong after the Branch House collapsed, prompting an urgent rescue operation.
The revelation follows a turbulent period for Trixie and Matthew, who married at the end of series 12. Financial difficulties arose shortly after, leading Matthew to suggest Trixie give up her career. He later moved to America for a business opportunity, with Trixie initially joining him but returning to London in series 14 to help Sister Julienne challenge the Board of Health.
With Trixie now confirming her permanent relocation to Poplar, her future on the show appears secure. It remains unclear whether Matthew will feature in the upcoming 15th series, due to air in January.
