Netflix is set to release a new romantic drama based on Andre Aciman's acclaimed novel Enigma Variations, which has been described as "magnificent and sexy" and is perfect for fans of Call Me by Your Name. The adaptation will star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, a front-runner for the role of James Bond, alongside Alicia Vikander.
Plot and Cast
The story follows Paul, a man whose life is transformed by a series of lovers over six years. Netflix describes it as "an intimate yet sweeping portrait of masculinity, sexuality and modern love," asking the question: "Will we know when we've found the one?"
Aaron Taylor-Johnson, known for 28 Years Later, Kick-Ass, Nosferatu, and Nocturnal Animals, plays Paul. He is joined by Alicia Vikander, celebrated for The Danish Girl and Tomb Raider, who portrays Claire, one of Paul's principal love interests.
Critical Acclaim
The New York Times Book Review hailed Enigma Variations as a "magnificent living thing," noting that "Aciman writes arousal so beautifully." Readers have also praised the book, with one Goodreads reviewer calling it "staggeringly beautiful" and "powerfully emotional." Another reader said the "book blew me away," while a third described it as "evocative, poetic and hopelessly romantic."
Release and Setting
An official launch date has not yet been announced, but the Netflix adaptation is expected to mirror the book's settings across Italy, New York, and New England.
