Actress Sue Johnston is set to reprise her iconic role as Sheila Grant in a special crossover episode between Hollyoaks and Brookside, airing in October to mark Hollyoaks' 30th anniversary. The episode will be filmed on the original Brookside Close in West Derby, with permission from the landowner and Liverpool Film Office.
Johnston, who rose to fame as the Liverpudlian matriarch in 1982, was the first cast member confirmed for the storyline. She said: “It'll be so lovely to go back and be Sheila for a day as it was such a big, enjoyable part of my life.” The character’s hard-hitting storylines helped establish Brookside’s reputation for tackling social issues, a legacy continued by Hollyoaks.
Hollyoaks executive producer Hannah Cheers described the episode as “a love letter to both Hollyoaks and Brookside.” She added: “Brookside gave birth to Hollyoaks — it grew up on the same site and eventually took over its sets. This special feels like both a moving and fitting tribute to our origin story.” Writer Steve Hughes, who began his career on Brookside, has written the episode.
Sir Phil Redmond, creator of both soaps, gave his blessing to the project. He said: “It is always bitter sweet thinking back to Brookie… But it is great that Lime Pictures are paying homage in their Hollyoaks anniversary crossover episodes.” The crossover will be the first time Brookside Close has been on screen since the show ended in 2003.
