Eva Longoria has been tapped to direct Netflix's upcoming comedy 'The Fifth Wheel', starring Kim Kardashian and written by Paula Pell and Janine Brito, sources tell Deadline. The project, which has been a priority for the streamer since acquiring it in a competitive auction over Thanksgiving weekend 2023, also sees Gloria Sanchez Productions joining as a producer alongside Kardashian, Pell, and Longoria's Hyphenate Media Group.
Plot details remain under wraps, but insiders say Kardashian will play the titular 'fifth wheel' in a female-led ensemble cast. The script has been praised by buyers involved in the auction as one of the funniest in recent memory, bolstered by Pell's track record and the involvement of Gloria Sanchez, known for hits like 'Booksmart' and 'Theater Camp'.
Longoria was chosen after a search for a female director, following her acclaimed studio debut 'Flamin' Hot', which won the audience award at SXSW 2023. While that film leaned dramatic, it showcased humour and heart, making Longoria a strong fit for this comedy. Kardashian is also set to star in the upcoming Hulu series 'All's Fair'.
