A 2001 television advert featuring a foul-mouthed boiler has resurfaced on TikTok, prompting viewers to question how it was ever allowed to air on UK television. The commercial, sponsored by the Energy Saving Trust, was part of the 'Boiler Behaving Badly' campaign and has now found a new audience 25 years later.
Viral Clip Sparks Nostalgia
A clip shared by TikTok user @millenials.nostalgia has brought back memories for viewers, with the uploader writing over the footage: "Never a day this doesn't crack me up." They added: "How this got aired, I don't know." The advert used a rude boiler to illustrate how an outdated, inefficient appliance can misbehave and waste energy.
In the clip, a family is shown relaxing in their living room when their boiler begins hurling abuse at them in a gruff voice. The boiler taunts the father with: "Baldy... Baldy... Baldilocks and the three hairs!" To the mother, it snaps: "Oh look at the state of you love, I wouldn't want to meet you on a dark night!" Then to the daughter, it sarcastically jibes: "Hello supermodel, got a boyfriend yet? No? Wouldn't with your breath neither!"
Viewers React to the Advert
The daughter quickly tidies herself up out of embarrassment, just before a voiceover cuts in to say: "Stop it. If your boiler's behaving badly then it's not energy efficient. Next time get a nice energy-saving one, it'll use a third less gas. Be good, be energy efficient."
The advert became a nostalgic cult classic across the UK for its blunt, playground-style mockery, with the phrase "Baldilocks and the three hairs" quickly becoming a widely-used joke at the time. Yet scores of people online have been left gobsmacked by the commercial, insisting it 'wouldn't air today'.
As the clip went viral and racked up more than 22,000 likes, one viewer declared: "Wow. I remember this and you didn't really bat an eyelid at the time." Another wrote: "When the UK has a sense of humour. Now everyone is offended." A third remarked: "I still say that line, 'Baldilocks and the three hairs'." While a fourth chipped in: "The country is so bland and boring now." Another user agreed: "This is when ads were funny."
Shift in TV Advertising Trends
Over the past decade (2016–2026), the most popular TV commercials in the UK have shifted away from traditional slapstick, instead gravitating towards viral social parodies, high-budget Christmas extravaganzas, and female empowerment campaigns. According to market research trends, standout adverts from the past decade include Aldi's Kevin the Carrot Christmas commercial (2016–present), Sport England's This Girl Can (2015/2016) and Greggs' vegan sausage roll launch (2019).
