Brenda Blethyn Unveils Heartwarming Family Ties to New Channel 4 Period Drama
Acclaimed actress Brenda Blethyn, best known for her role in Vera, has opened up about a deeply personal connection to her latest project, the Channel 4 period drama A Woman of Substance. In an interview on Lorraine, Blethyn revealed that her mother's experiences as a maid in a wealthy Kent household inspired her to take on the role of Emma Harte, a character who rises from kitchen maid to department store tycoon.
A Personal Inspiration Behind the Role
Speaking to presenter Christine Lampard, Blethyn explained that her interest in the drama was sparked by her family history. "Funnily enough, one of the reasons I was very interested in taking part was my mum started as a skivvy in a big rich house down in Kent around about the same time, maybe a few years after," she shared. "That's where she met my dad, who was the chauffeur. My dad was born in 1894, it's just reminiscent of that and I used to love hearing their stories."
When asked if she recalled her mother's tales of hard work, Blethyn confirmed, adding, "Yeah, it was such hard work for long hours of the day. You have to save up, money was very tight, and you had to work very hard just to exist." However, she humorously noted that unlike her character, her mother did not become the world's richest woman.
Plot and Cast Details
A Woman of Substance, based on the novel of the same name, premieres next week and follows Emma Harte's journey from an impoverished maid in 1911 Yorkshire to a luxury New York penthouse owner. The series is described as a rags-to-riches tale that defies societal expectations, with Emma challenging roles and smashing glass ceilings through revenge and ambition.
Blethyn stars alongside a talented cast including Jessica Reynolds, Emmett J. Scanlan, Harry Cadby, and Will Mellor. She praised Reynolds, who plays the younger version of Emma, saying, "Honest to god, she is absolutely impeccable, her performance is like a breath of fresh air. I can't wait for everyone to see her!"
