The fourth season of Blue Lights premiered on BBC One on Tuesday, September 29, with viewers quickly sharing their reactions to the opening episode.
Developed by Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson, the Belfast-set police drama first aired in 2023 to widespread praise. The new episodes centre on a migrant resource centre, where a hostile mob of anti-immigration demonstrators exploit social media to spread hateful rhetoric.

According to the official synopsis, "Three years into their jobs as response officers, Constables Grace Ellis, Tommy Foster, and Annie Conlon are operating at their limit, facing a new threat on the streets that the police can barely control."
The synopsis adds, "Meanwhile, the murder trial of Gerry Cliff exposes a dangerous and long-buried secret that leads to chaos both inside the police and across the criminal underworld. As they grapple with big decisions about their future, Grace, Tommy and Annie must find the courage to face the greatest threat they have ever encountered: the truth."
The opening episode saw the team face a significant obstacle following rising tensions at a local gathering. Additionally, the probe into Dana Morgan's (Cathy Tyson) narcotics alliance with Tina McIntyre (Abigail McGibbon) encountered difficulties.
Mixed reactions from viewers
Several BBC audiences were quick to voice criticism of the series four opener, feeling the narrative lacked authenticity and describing the storyline as "boring". One X user confessed they were "disappointed".

Discussing her character Grace Ellis in the latest series, lead actress Siân Brooke previously explained: "Once again Grace is really tested in the job this time around. She's desperate to move forward and feels frustrated that it isn't happening as quickly as she wants."
She added: "The officers are all very much at the coalface from the very first episode. It's quite chaotic for them and we kick off the season with a very heavy action sequence where a migrant centre has been attacked and all of our officers are right in the middle of it, dealing with a mob."
