Benidorm is Murder star John Hannah has teased that the Channel 5 crime drama is about to become even more explosive. The actor, who plays Dennis, a former detective who escapes his past for a new life in Benidorm running a Scottish beach bar, hinted at darker episodes to come.
Plot and Characters
Dennis's seemingly mundane life is upturned when he hires a new barmaid, Rosa (played by Carolina Becquer), who is also a crime drama enthusiast. The synopsis teases: "Together, they're the last people anyone would trust to solve a murder — which is exactly why they keep solving them."
Set in the chaotic Benidorm, the series features tribute acts, bingo queens, hen parties, and sunburnt tourists. Each episode delivers a fresh puzzle with clues, twists, and a satisfying solution. Sharp Spanish inspector Maria and puppy-ish young cop Jesús grudgingly learn to value the pair's instincts.
Darker Turns Ahead
As the series continues on Thursday, August 6, John and Carolina exclusively revealed how dark and explosive things are about to get. Carolina said: "As the episodes go on, you get to learn more about Rosa's life and her own problem, and Dennis' life. Each episode gives you a bit more... and then everything explodes."
John added: "It gets quite dark... they take a bit of a turn. It's still funny, but it's dark and serious, and there are real consequences for people."
John also recalled how one of the first scenes saw Rosa telling Dennis: "You need some help." Hinting at the depth behind those words, he shared: "It was true on so many levels and we go on that journey. She saves me."
Authentic Crime Drama
Ahead of the series airing, John praised the "colourful characters" in Benidorm for creating an "authentic" crime drama. He said: "There’s great writing, I’m sure the other shows have great writers too but for me, with a lot of those kind of shows, I switch off when something happens that I just don’t believe in."
He added: "I lose interest when I don’t believe in it anymore."
