Ben Miller, known for his role in Death in Paradise, has admitted he doesn't understand the crimes in his latest detective show, Professor T. The actor, who previously played DI Richard Poole on the BBC series, now stars as a criminology professor with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder who helps police solve cases in the ITV drama.
Professor T series four
The fourth series of Professor T is set to launch later this month. During an appearance on The One Show alongside co-star Sunetra Sarker, Miller told hosts Alex Jones and Roman Kemp: "He is helping the Cambridgeshire police solve truly baffling crimes. I mean, I don't think I've understood one yet!"
Sarker, who plays DCI Maiya Goswami, agreed, adding that the crimes are "deliberately concocted to be like jigsaw puzzles." She said: "I dare anybody in the audience to know what the crime, what caused the crime at the beginning, because the professor comes from things so left field, doesn't it?"
Real crimes inspiration
Miller explained that the professor's approach stems from his deep understanding of criminal psychology. "He always brings that into the investigation," he said. "And we base the crimes on real, you know, real crimes and real situations. So there's that kind of little pearl of authenticity."
Sarker noted that her character and Miller's "could not be more different," with her character being evidence-based and procedural, while the professor "creates his own world where he works it out."
Series history
Professor T started in 2021 and quickly became a favourite with viewers. While UK audiences are about to see series four, the fifth season has also been filmed and will air in the US this month. Professor T returns on August 19.
