BBC's 'The Gold' Crime Drama Based on True Story Praised

The crime miniseries 'The Gold' has captivated audiences with its dramatisation of the 1983 Brink's-Mat robbery, one of Britain's most audacious heists. The two-season drama, written and developed by Neil Forsyth, has been hailed as 'remarkable' and 'an exceptional story' by fans and critics alike.

Plot and True Story

The Gold dramatises the Brink's-Mat robbery that took place on 26 November 1983 at the Heathrow International Trading Estate in London. Thieves stole £26 million in cash, gold bullion, and diamonds from a warehouse operated by Brink's-Mat. Adjusted for inflation, the stolen loot would be worth approximately £290 million in 2025. At the time, it was the largest robbery in history. While several arrests were made, including Micky McAvoy and Brian Robinson for armed robbery, the bulk of the gold remains unrecovered.

Cast and Reception

The series features an ensemble cast including Hugh Bonneville, Dominic Cooper, Charlotte Spencer, Emun Elliott, Sean Harris, Jack Lowden, and Tom Cullen. The first six-episode series premiered on BBC One in February 2023, followed by a second six-episode series in June 2025. Every episode is available to stream free on BBC iPlayer or for purchase on Prime Video and Apple TV.

The Gold has earned a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critic Barbara Allen noted: 'The second and final series follows the other half of the money on an international trail that takes in the Canary Islands, the Caribbean and the Isle of Man, and it's just as remarkable and off-kilter a watch.'

Fan Reactions

Viewers have praised the series for its gripping narrative and outstanding performances. One fan said: 'Somehow they made the aftermath just as gripping as the robbery itself. Brilliant performances and not a wasted episode.' Another added: 'I thought season 2 was every bit as good as the first... Definitely one of the best British shows I've watched in a long time.' A third viewer commented: 'The two seasons of The Gold form an exceptional story. Very well written, acted and directed with not a dull minute.'

The Gold is streaming now on BBC iPlayer.
