The BBC has confirmed which programme will replace BBC Breakfast on Sundays. Earlier this year, it was announced that BBC Breakfast would no longer air on Sundays as part of a BBC shake-up. The change was announced in June, and BBC Breakfast is among the high-profile shows affected after the new director general announced plans to cut £80 million from programming on TV, radio, and news as part of a huge round of cuts across the corporation.
New Sunday schedule
BBC Breakfast, which usually airs on Sundays from 6am until 9am, has been replaced with BBC News, which will run in the same time slot, and will also be followed by Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg. Other changes include Radio 4's The World Tonight ending in September, and the number of permanent presenters on Today will be cut from five to four, with a single anchor on Saturdays. World Tonight is being replaced by Newshour.
Cost-cutting measures
Confirming the move, former Google executive Matt Brittin said at the time of the announcement: "We will reduce commissioning spend across Content, News and Nations by around £80 million in 2027–28 and review our broadcast TV channels and radio network portfolio as audiences move online. The scale of savings requires tough choices, careful work, and won’t all be ready at once. We are committed to letting you know as soon as we have plans in your area. All divisions will be making significant savings."
Presenters bid farewell
In July, Rachel Burden bid farewell to viewers after presenting her final ever Sunday BBC Breakfast. Alongside a selection of photographs from the programme, Rachel wrote on Instagram, "This is my last Sunday on the @bbcbreakfast sofa before the schedule changes in September - no complaints there, we have to cut our cloth. But having done this for 10+ years, just wanted to say a massive thanks to the team who’ve worked through their Saturday nights to put the programme together, my Breakfast buddies Roger and @benthompsontv (among other lovely fellas who I’ve shared the sofa with) and of course the divine @fieldsofpoppys who puts me together most weeks." She wrapped up the heartfelt post, "Thanks for watching. Here’s to a guaranteed Sunday lie-in."
Luxmy Gopal, who hosted her final Sunday show earlier this month, also took to social media to share some highlights from hosting on the red sofa. She wrote, "To misquote The Kinks: thank you for the Sundays! Today was my last Sunday BBC Breakfast, 5 years after my first. So grateful to an unfailingly kind team, and supportive viewers, figuratively letting me into their living rooms that time of the morning."
BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
