The BBC has announced that the acclaimed drama Peaky Blinders will return with two new series, set to air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, as well as globally on Netflix. Creator Steven Knight will bring a new generation of the Shelby family to the screen, with production set to take place in Birmingham at Digbeth Loc. Studios.
Set in 1953, the new series will follow the Shelby family as they navigate a city rebuilding after the heavy bombing of World War II. The race to own Birmingham’s massive reconstruction project becomes a brutal contest, with the family at its heart. Knight described the new chapter as “rooted in Birmingham” and focused on a city “rising from the ashes of the Birmingham blitz”.
Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, called the show “game-changing” and praised Knight’s work, adding that filming will begin in Birmingham. Mona Qureshi of Netflix expressed excitement for Knight’s return to the streets of Birmingham and the next generation of Shelbys.
The series will be produced by Kudos and Garrison Drama, with executive producers including Steven Knight, Cillian Murphy, and others. The West Midlands Combined Authority supports the production, which is the first commission under a new partnership to expand BBC investment in the region.
