BBC Breakfast presenter Sally Nugent was forced to look away during Wednesday’s programme after a picture of a large spider flashed up on screen. Co-star Roger Johnson had warned viewers that she would need to read the next segment with her eyes closed.
The image showed an orb-weaver spider, which secured UK photographer Jamie Smart the Under 10 title in the Natural History Museum’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. Sally declared, “I’m not going to look at the picture,” before continuing to read from the teleprompter.
After the segment, Roger remarked, “She’s not a fan of spiders.” Weather presenter Carol Kirkwood, who was also in the studio, agreed, saying she particularly dislikes “the great big, hairy ones you find in the bath.” Roger admitted he picks them up and puts them outside, but Carol described him as “a braver man than me”.
Later in the show, Sally reported that household energy debt has risen to an eight-year high, with customers collectively owing £780 million heading into winter, according to a survey by Uswitch.
