BBC Breakfast presenters Sally Nugent and Jon Kay apologised to viewers after complaints about the show's coverage of the solar eclipse due to take place in the UK on Wednesday evening (August 12).
Viewers complain about 'too much' coverage
Many viewers thought there was "too much" coverage, posting messages on social media complaining about the amount of references to the upcoming event and about how many warnings were being issued about not looking at the sun.
The social media posts started flooding in as BBC Breakfast aired, with one person writing on X: "Please stop…. It’s like f****** nursery TV… we KNOW…. Don’t look at the sun…"
"This eclipse coverage is really too much now," someone else wrote on the platform, which was formerly Twitter. "Who wants to hear from a bloke in Spain what it will look like there? I think we already know what an eclipse looks like."
Presenters say sorry
Sally and Jon later acknowledged the complaints after reading out a message from a viewer, with both presenters saying "sorry" to her.
During a discussion about the eclipse, Jon told viewers: "We've got correspondents and cameras everywhere." Sally added: "We've literally got it covered."
Jon then said: "Yeah, Jean's not going to be happy with that news. Jean in Wolverhampton has just been in touch and said, 'I'm looking forward to the eclipse, but I'm now sick and fed up with hearing about it - 99% of the news has been about the eclipse this morning'."
Apology accepted?
"Sorry Jean," said Sally, as Jon admitted: "Just imagine, if it had been a total eclipse, it would have been 100%, wouldn't it?"
"Well, we've gone pretty close!" said Sally, adding: "Sorry."
