BBC Breakfast presenters Sally Nugent and Jon Kay fought back tears during an emotional interview with Sir Chris Hoy, who discussed his incurable prostate cancer diagnosis. The Olympic champion, who revealed in October 2024 that his condition was terminal, appeared alongside his wife Sarra, who lives with multiple sclerosis.
The couple have created a documentary titled 'Sir Chris Hoy: Cancer, Courage and Me', offering an intimate look at their journey. Sally described it as 'one of the most inspirational stories I have ever worked on', while Jon noted Hoy's mission to raise awareness and encourage others with terminal illness to live life to the fullest.
Reflecting on the experience, Sally recalled sitting in a consultation with Hoy's doctor: 'I remember sitting there thinking, Wow, I can't believe I'm in this room.' Sarra echoed the sentiment, saying they too 'can't quite believe it'. Hoy spoke of adapting quickly but also needing time to grieve: 'You do have to allow yourself time to grieve ... but you have to keep pushing on.'
In an emotional moment, Sarra told Hoy: 'I think I'm the luckiest person to have met him. It is my life's privilege to walk alongside him as he goes through this.' Hoy expressed hope that the documentary would inspire other families, saying: 'Life goes on, and you have to make the most of every opportunity.'
