Avid war drama fans searching for a new series to binge-watch are being urged to stream the 10-part World War II series Band of Brothers on HBO Max, which some claim is the 'greatest TV series of all time'.
Created by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, the show follows the men of Easy Company as they parachute into enemy territory on D-Day. It tells the story of Easy Company, the 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, from 1942 to the end of World War II, and is based on historian Stephen E. Ambrose's 1992 non-fiction book of the same name.
A Story Based on Real Veterans
The series begins during the branch's paratrooper training and follows its participation in the Western Front of World War II from D-Day to their occupation of Hitler's fortress at Berchtesgaden. The events are based on Ambrose's research and recorded interviews with Easy Company veterans.
Each episode begins with excerpts from interviews with some of the survivors, who are identified by name only at the end of the finale. In a video, a couple named Max and Skylar urged people to watch the series, saying: "If we could only recommend one show about World War II, it would be this HBO series."
Production and Cast
Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg had previously worked together on the 1998 film Saving Private Ryan, from which the series got many of its visual cues and crew members. They have since also worked together on other war dramas, including The Pacific (2010) and Masters of the Air (2024).
Band of Brothers stars actors like David Schwimmer as Captain Sobel, Tom Hardy as Private John Janovec, and Damian Lewis, who was nominated for a Golden Globe award for his portrayal of U.S. Army Major Richard Winters.
Awards and Reception
The series won seven Emmy Awards after being nominated for 20. It also won a Golden Globe, as well as other awards. It continues to be a highly praised TV series to this day, with a rating of 9.4 out of 10 on IMDb and a rating of 97 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, with some critics calling it 'the best TV series of all time'.
