The Australian remake of Ghosts has arrived on BBC iPlayer, and while it doesn't surpass the original UK series, it offers a charming and ridiculous addition to the growing franchise. After watching three versions of the show, one reviewer found themselves won over by the end.
The Premise
The original BBC series, created by the masterminds behind Horrible Histories, follows a couple, Alison and Mike, who inherit a haunted stately home inhabited by eccentric ghosts. When Alison gains the ability to see the dead, chaos ensues. The show became an instant classic for its hearty humour and found family.
The UK series ended in 2023, with a feature film due in October. The US version, starring Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar, proved successful with its own direction and up to 22 episodes per season.
The Australian Remake
Australia's take features Tamala Shelton and Rowan Witt as Kate and Sean, a bewildered couple who inherit a haunted property. The ghosts are largely original, with few parallels to the original cohort. The uptight heiress Miranda blends elements of the Captain and Lady Fanny, while sex-obsessed Joon resembles Julian.
The standout is Michelle Braiser's Lindy, a lycra-clad exercise guru with brilliant comedic timing, reminiscent of the ditzy Kitty from the UK version.
Verdict
Although it doesn't reach the caliber of the UK original, Australia's remake is an earnest attempt that managed to reel in viewers by the end. Ridiculous plotlines, from a hippy mother moving in to a sweet proposal episode, bring the show together. The reviewer says, 'I’ll happily tune into another season.'
