Apple TV's comedy series Ted Lasso and Netflix's royal drama The Crown emerged as the biggest winners at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards, held in Los Angeles on Sunday. Ted Lasso's star Jason Sudeikis won best lead comedy actor, while his co-stars Hannah Waddingham and Brett Goldstein took home supporting actress and actor awards.
The Crown claimed the top prize for best drama series, alongside four acting wins: Gillian Anderson for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher, Olivia Colman for Queen Elizabeth II, Josh O'Connor for Prince Charles, and Tobias Menzies for the Duke of Edinburgh. Colman, emotional in her speech, dedicated her win to her father, who died during the pandemic.
British talent was well represented, with Michaela Coel winning outstanding writing for a limited series for her drama I May Destroy You. She urged aspiring writers to 'write the tale that scares you' and to 'not be afraid to disappear' from social media. Kate Winslet and Ewan McGregor won best actress and actor in a limited series for Mare of Easttown and Halston, respectively.
However, the ceremony faced criticism for a lack of diversity in the acting categories, as all 12 awards went to white performers. RuPaul Charles, host of RuPaul's Drag Race, became the most-awarded black artist in Emmy history with his 11th win, but no black actors won in the main acting categories.
