Antiques Roadshow viewers were left baffled after a guest appeared unfazed by a staggering valuation of up to £80,000 for a painting by L.S. Lowry. The episode, filmed in Oxfordshire, saw art historian Lawrence Hendra examine the artwork, which the owner had purchased for £1,300 while buying an antique bicycle.
Hendra admitted feeling nervous about authenticating the piece, noting that Lowry is one of the most faked artists. However, a label from the Lefevre Gallery on the reverse provided crucial provenance, leading to the expert's estimate of £60,000 to £80,000 at auction.
The guest, who described himself as a former teddy boy, simply replied, “I like the sound of that. Okay, thank you,” with a chuckle. His calm demeanour sparked confusion on social media, with one fan writing, “All that money and all he can say is an 'Ok thank you'... I'm so disappointed.”
Another viewer commented, “Ok, thank you? Is that it? If I had been told I was holding onto that much money I would have screamed.” However, some defended the guest, noting his age and suggesting he was not one to “hop skip and jump.”
