Apple has confirmed that the fifth season of The Morning Show, currently in production and due to premiere next year, will be the series' last. The show was one of the streaming service's first original series, receiving a straight-to-order two-season commission in 2017.
Season four, set in spring 2024, saw Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon) end up in a Belarus gulag, while Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston) was pushed out by Celine Dumont (Marion Cotillard). Alex then threatened legal action, and with the help of her father and Chip Black, a confession was obtained from Celine, who fled to France.
New cast members for the final season include Jeff Daniels as self-made billionaire Lukas, Jesse Williams as UBN's new head of news Vernon, and Reneé Rapp as a rising star in the news division. They join returning stars including Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, and Jon Hamm.
Jennifer Aniston said: 'From the beginning, Apple has supported our vision for The Morning Show... we feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to tell stories that reflect what’s happening in the world around us with a twist of dark humor.' Reese Witherspoon added that telling the story of press freedom and journalists protecting the fourth estate has been 'the creative privilege of my career'.
The series has earned 28 Emmy nominations across its first four seasons, with season three receiving 16 nods. Apple highlighted that many cast and crew have ongoing projects with the company, including Witherspoon's Lucky and Hamm's Your Friends and Neighbors.
