Prime Minister Andy Burnham appeared on This Morning with Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary, just days after assuming office. He discussed his plans for adult social care based on his experience caring for his father, who has Alzheimer's.
When asked about his father's wellbeing, Burnham responded: "He's ok. He's well looked after in the place that he is." Alison said his father must be "so proud," and Dermot added: "And being Prime Minister!"
Burnham Becomes Emotional
Burnham shared a story from the care home staff: "They said, on the day that I went to Downing Street, they got him right in front of the television, and a few of them said, 'Look Roy, look'." Fighting back tears, he confessed: "It makes me a bit emotional." He added: "I was with my mum and I was talking to my mum, talking about my dad a little bit."
Alison offered sympathy, saying: "They're our everything, our parents are our core values, they are our everything."
Alison Hammond's Weight Loss Journey
Earlier on This Morning, Alison opened up about her weight loss journey and the message from her mother that sparked her transformation. She lost 11 stone and had been diagnosed with pre-diabetes. Her mother Maria had Type 2 diabetes before her death from lung and liver cancer in January 2020.
Alison recalled: "I'll never forget when my mum when she was really ill in hospital, I'll never forget the day when she looked at me, and she's never commented on my weight in my whole life. And she said, 'Alison, don’t end up like me, try and sort out your weight'." She added: "I was 30 stone that day and the fact that it came from my mum, who was like my core values and everything like, that’s the day I changed."
