Alicia Silverstone has revealed that the planned Clueless reboot series is still in the “baby stages.” The actress is set to reprise her iconic role as Cher Horowitz in a television series for streaming service Peacock, announced in April.
In a new interview with Today, Silverstone said: “I’m really excited about it. I think we’re going to try really hard. The goal is to make it honour what everyone loves about Clueless and Cher.” She added: “We want to honour that, but also bring something fresh and new to it. I’m confident that we’ll be able to do that, but we’re in baby stages right now.”
Silverstone is attached to executive produce alongside original writer-director Amy Heckerling and producer Robert Lawrence. The series will be written and executive produced by Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage, and Jordan Weiss of Fake Empire Productions, the team behind the Gossip Girl reboot and Dollface.
The original 1995 film, loosely based on Jane Austen’s Emma, followed popular California high schooler Cher Horowitz and has retained a cult following. It has previously been adapted into a TV series (1996–1999) and a West End musical. Many original stars appeared in that first series except Silverstone, whose return has excited fans, though some note the absence of the late Brittany Murphy, who played Tai Frasier.
