BBC presenter Alex Jones was so moved by her colleague's emotional charity update that she had to pull her car over, confessing she was left in floods of tears.
An Emotional Morning on the Radio
The incident occurred on Wednesday, November 12, as Alex listened to BBC Radio 2 during her journey. Her co-host, Sara Cox, was in the midst of a gruelling 135-mile run across four counties for BBC Children in Need.
Later that evening on The One Show, which airs on BBC One at 7pm on weekdays, Alex discussed the moment with her co-presenter Angellica Bell. "We just need to talk about Sara for a minute," Alex began. "Did you hear her on Radio 2 this morning? I had to pull over because I was in floods of tears. She is amazing."
A Million-Pound Milestone
The source of the powerful emotion was a live radio conversation between Sara Cox and fellow DJ Scott Mills. During the broadcast, Scott delivered the staggering news that Sara's fundraising efforts had officially surpassed one million pounds, with the total standing at over £1,002,869.
Sara was audibly stunned and overcome by the announcement. "Oh my God! That is amazing. Thank you. You've completely broken me," she responded, brushing tears from her eyes. "Everybody who has donated, thank you so much... Every fiver, every tenner... it all makes a massive difference."
Scott Mills, sounding emotional himself, praised his colleague, telling her, "I am so proud of you."
Overwhelming Support from Colleagues
Sara's challenge, which involves running the equivalent of five marathons in five days through Northumberland, Durham, North Yorkshire, and West Yorkshire, has clearly struck a chord with the public and her BBC peers alike.
Wrapping up her tribute on The One Show, Alex Jones sent a direct message of support: "If you're watching Sara, good luck, we are so behind you."
The monumental fundraising effort is for the 2025 BBC Children in Need appeal, which will be broadcast live on Friday, November 14 on BBC One from 7pm.
